Silk

Silk: Silk is an animal fibre which is obtained from an insect called silk moth.  Silkworms spin the silk fibres. Silk fibre is made up of a protein. Silk is the strongest natural fibre.

Sericulture: it means ‘silk farming.’ The rearing of silkworms for obtaining silk is called sericulture.

Silk is called the Queen of textiles. Silk is obtained from silkworms. The finest silk comes from the silkworms produced by the Bombyx mori moth. Silk is strong, shiny, lustorus fibre that is used to make fabrics. China and Japan manufacture more than 50% of the world silk production. India and Italy are also significant silk producers. In india, about 90% mulberry silk comes from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil nadu.
